Can You Improve Your iPhone Battery Capacity?
A common question we hear at Mitchell Electronics is: Is there anything I can do to improve my iPhone battery capacity? This question is similar to asking, “My gas tank is at 25%, how do I get it full again?” The simple answer? You fill it up with gas. The same principle applies to batteries—when their capacity declines to a too-low level, the only solution is to replace them.
Understanding Battery Capacity
All batteries, including the lithium-ion battery in your iPhone, degrade over time. When new, they hold a maximum charge, but as they go through charge cycles, their ability to store energy diminishes. This is a natural and unavoidable process.
What You Can Do
While you can’t increase the total capacity of an aging battery, you can take steps to maximize its lifespan:
- Avoid Extreme Temperatures – Heat is a major battery killer. Try to keep your iPhone out of direct sunlight and away from extreme cold.
- Charge Smartly – Avoid letting your battery drain to 0% frequently. Instead, keep it charged between 20% and 80% when possible.
- Use Official Chargers – Cheap, third-party chargers can harm battery health over time. Stick to Apple-certified accessories.
- Enable Low Power Mode – This reduces background activity, helping your battery last longer between charges.
- Limit Background Apps & Services – Reducing push notifications and disabling location services for unused apps can help your battery last longer daily.
When to Replace Your Battery
If your iPhone’s battery health (found under Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging) is below 80%, it may be time for a replacement. At this point, the battery’s ability to hold a charge has significantly diminished, and performance may suffer.
