An Introduction To AC To AC Converters!

What to know more about AC To AC Converters? An AC to AC converter simply means a device which can convert AC waveforms to another AC waveform. The output voltage and frequency can be managed according to requirements and usage. AC voltage transformers are thyristor based transformers which are used to convert fixed voltage to any required voltage without any change in frequency. Transformers that are used to converts AC power of one frequency to another different frequency are known as Cycloconverters. Later in this article we are going to explain about how this phenomenon of transformer takes place.

AC to AC Converters Process

AC to AC voltage conversion without changing the frequency can be performed in two ways. One is On-off control and another is AC phase control. On-off control process is also known as Integral cycle control.

In On-off control method the load power can be managed or controlled by connecting the source to the load for few numbers of complete cycles and then disconnecting it from source for another few numbers of cycles and then repeating the switching this cycling process again and again. This kind of conversion is suitable for system which has large time constant. It can be used in heating loads applications and average power of load can be varied from 0% to 10%.

AC To AC Converters Phas Control

In AC Phase Control method thyristors are fired once after every cycle and then delayed from zero crossing. Only a part of voltage waveform appears across the load and provide control on voltage. The load current appears in pulses and zero crossing can be used to turn off the thyristors. This process is suitable for loads with short time constant; the output voltage can vary according to control over instant of firing.

Uses of AC to AC Transformers:

There are so many uses of transformers in human’s daily life. Following are the some uses of AC to AC converts or transformers:

It can be used for lamp dimming, series universal motor speed controller and heat controller. Phase control process is useful for the same applications but burst firing is not useful for filament lamps because of lamp flicker and not even for motor speed control because of fluctuating torque. Burst firing is suited for heat control because of long thermal constant of heating element. Other applications include spot welding, solid state contactors etc.

AC To AC Converters Conclusion:

This article is all about AC to AC converters / transformers and the process description how this conversion takes place. The demand of this kind of transformers is high as it can also be used as a transformers component or as a machine’s components. The uses of such transformers depend on the requirement of application and will be quiet useful where time constant of the system is high. If the time constant of the system is low then one can go other method of conversions. For additional transformer information please feel free to contact Mitchell Electronics to discuss your requirements.
